I played netball throughout my childhood and loved it but had several years out from playing due to finishing school then travelling, studying and then moving across the country. Netball has always been a big joy of mine so I asked my local Facebook group for the Northumberland town we moved to if there were any local Netball clubs. I couldn’t believe that there were 3 local friendly leagues all within a short driving distance from my doorstep!!

Signing up and joining the league was one of the best decisions I’ve made since moving up North. The leagues are friendly, supportive and I’ve made some amazing friends. Having moved to the North from down South it’s always daunting joining new clubs and meeting new people, especially as I didn’t know anyone from the local area. But Debbie (our local coordinator) helped me to find some teams and I even Captain on a Monday and Wednesday night now!!

I work full-time from home as a Psychotherapist and Mental Health Practitioner, so netball in the evenings is my escape and I try to play as much as I can. Some nights I’ll be playing 2 matches and it helps to release all the pressures of the working day.

Netball is not only amazing for your physical health but has been incredible for my mental health too. Being diagnosed with Autism and ADHD comes with struggles (as well as several superpowers – ish!!) which often makes trying new things and meeting new people tricky. The Netball girls have been supportive, inclusive and even cheer when receiving a Taz-Bomb (one of my signature lobs of the ball which may or may not be planned!!)

I would 100% recommend finding and going to your local club. Whether you’re a professional who already plays or someone who hasn’t picked up a netball before, the leagues are inclusive, fun, supportive and you may even make friends for life!!
